The last two weeks here have actually felt pretty normal. It’s almost like I just moved to a different neighborhood in Minneapolis. But, obviously a lot has changed.  The Joys of Remote Freelancing One of the biggest changes has been going from a full-time job to working as a remote freelancer. I’m so happy that I made the leap. Working for myself is just a better fit for the way my brain works, and here are a few reasons why: I work when I’m feeling the most productive. For me, I’m most productive late at night and early in the morning. So, for instance, last week I couldn’t sleep one night, so I got out of bed around midnight and worked until 7am. Then, I went to bed when my brain was ready to shut off, instead of trying to force myself into a schedule. I take more fulfilling, effective breaks. Working in an office setting, breaks are limited to what you can do in that environment. A short walk through an office complex to grab a second/third/fourth cup of coffee that I never really needed definitely isn’t the most effective way to reenergize. Now, when I need a break, I can go for a run, or grab a book and walk to the park, or run a quick errand. When you hit a wall, I think it’s important to be able to completely separate yourself from the point of frustration and come back to it with a clear head. I’m working on a wider variety of projects. What, are you surprised that I like variety? Well you shouldn’t be ;) I love change, in every aspect of life. And work is no exception. In the past few weeks, I’ve worked on projects as a UX designer, researcher, visual designer, front-end developer and content strategist. Definitely not something you’re able to do in most full-time jobs.  I choose the right environment for the task at hand. When I wake up in the morning and am just diving into the day, I’ll walk to a coffee shop and catch up on email. When I need complete, quiet focus, I’ll work from home. If I need a little entrepreneurial inspiration, I’ll head to the co-working space downtown. I’ve even grabbed a notebook and headed to the park to do some brainstorming and sketching. There are obviously some challenges that come with being a remote freelancer, but I won’t bore you with those :)  So, other than work, what else have I been up to? Seeing Familiar Faces When I posted on Facebook that I was in Denver, I was excited when a few different friends from college messaged me to let me know they lived in the area. I was able to visit my friend Jenny from high school and college last week, who just moved to Colorado this year. She invited me and our friend Alanna (also from college) over for dinner. It had been way too long since I had last seen Jenny, probably while we were still in college. But, there are certain people you meet in life who, no matter how much time goes by, you feel like you can pick up right where you left off. Over the last three weeks, I also was able to see three of my aunts. My Aunt Laura and I went to lunch one of my first few days in Denver. We hadn’t seen each other in a pretty long time, so it was nice to catch up. And my Aunt Mikki and Aunt Maureen stopped by just last night. We went to Colorado Beer Co and had some tasty brews, did a little “shopping”, went out to dinner in my neighborhood, and then had a bonfire in my backyard. Lots of laughing, as I can always count on when we’re together! Meeting New People Luckily, my roommate Saaraa is really great. I keep telling her that she’s set the bar way too high for the rest of the temporary roomies I’ll have along the way. Last week, we met up with a couple of her friends, Bashir and Josh, and ended up at a really fun bar with an awesome hip-hop DJ. Although my tall, lanky, white-guy dance moves might not have impressed anyone there, we sure as hell had a lot of fun! I’ve also been going to some Meetups in Denver, which has been an easy way to meet new people. There are quite a few UX groups, so I’ve gone to a couple happy hours and a UX book club. I even went to a really fun soccer Meetup. It was basically a soccer camp for adults, which was a good thing since I haven’t kicked a soccer ball since junior year of high school!  So, now I have about a week left in Denver. While I was getting ready to leave Minneapolis, I had thought about how great it was going to be meeting new people while I traveled from place to place. And I was right. The people I’ve met so far have been incredible. What I hadn’t thought about was how many goodbyes I was setting myself up for. It’ll be a busy week trying to spend time with new friends, trying to connect with some old friends, and trying to see as much as I can before I go. One thing is for sure. I’ll be back, Denver. I’ll be back.

I rented a room in the Highland neighborhood for the month of October. My roommate, Saaraa, is a travel nurse, and got to Denver just a week or two before me. She’s awesome! Really friendly, and really active. I spent the first couple days just getting settled in and checking out the neighborhood. Ashley, the person who I’m renting the Airbnb from, is letting me use her desk at Green Spaces, a co-working space in the RiNo Arts District near downtown Denver. So, I stopped by to check out the space, and it’s really nice. Ashley is also letting me stay at a place she rents in Nederland this weekend. Nederland is about an hour away, just outside of Boulder, in the mountains. The place that I’m staying at is a converted train caboose! So stay tuned for pictures of that :)

I rented a tiny cabin at Wickiup Village Cabins, at the bottom of Spearfish Canyon for a couple nights. My family and I used to go to the Sturgis Rally every year, and this is where we always stayed. So it was cool to be back; it brought back a lot of memories. I remember going as a kid, and riding on the back of my dad’s motorcycle. And I remember the first year that I had my own motorcycle to ride. It was the first year that I felt like I was really a part of it, and not just watching it happen. It was exciting, and admittedly, somewhat terrifying. The night before I left town, my brothers and I were reminiscing about that first year. We were riding through the Black Hills, and as we were on our way back to the cabins at the end of the day, it started to rain. We decided to pull off at a bar to try and wait out the storm, but instead of it clearing up, it turned into a downpour. It wasn’t going to stop anytime soon, so we had to make the decision to get back on our bikes and ride to the bottom of the canyon, where our cabins were. By now, it was night, which in Spearfish Canyon, means totally pitch black. Between the dark and the rain, we could hardly see a few inches in front of our faces, and we had to somehow navigate the ridiculously winding roads without driving off into a ditch. In the end, we made it back safely, and now we can laugh about it. On Sunday, I decided to stop by the bar where we tried to wait out the rain, which was exactly how I remembered it. While I was driving around the Black Hills, I stopped by Crow Peak Brewery, where I met Lisa, Megan, Michelle and Eric, a small group of friends who grew up in Spearfish. They were ridiculous, in the best way possible, as they shared all of their small town drama. Lisa was the bartender, who reminded me a lot of Iliza Shlesinger; the way she looked, her sense of humor, even her voice. Megan explained to me that Michelle married her brother, and they became friends. But in high school, Michelle hated Megan because, as Michelle put it, “She was a stuck up bitch.” Megan’s response was, “Yeah, probably because I was into drugs and you weren’t.” To which Michelle corrected, “No, we were just into different drugs.” Megan looked at me and without hesitation said, “I did a lot of meth!” Both of them now have kids, have been clean 11 years, and were off to Megan’s dad’s birthday party later that day together. It’s funny how friendships evolve, isn’t it? So far, it’s been incredible wandering through South Dakota. I have already gotten so much advice from people that I’ve met along the way about places to visit and things to do. I’m only a few days in, and I can already tell it’s gonna be quite an adventure!

To my co-workers from McCann and MITHUN, to my friends (who I consider family) who are the most supportive and encouraging people in the world, and to my family, who I am so grateful to have. The only moment of hesitation I’ve had about this whole thing is when I think about being away from my nephew and nieces for so long. And yes, mom, I’ll miss you too ;) But the kids are just so friggin great, and it’s been so fun to see their personalities grow. Here we all are on our family vacation this summer… My parents’ had the fam over for a send-off dinner my last night in town. The kids all made me cards, and my niece Abby brought me a going away present… Contents: 4 plastic cups 1 tube cherry Chapstick, empty 3 soldiers to keep me safe 1 “cool” rock $120 in counterfeit bills 1 vending machine prize container, empty 1 votive candle in case it gets dark 2 combs, possibly for lice removal 1 rubber seahorse, confiscated by her sister Ally before the end of the night 1 monkey, no barrel I know I’ll move back to Minnesota. I couldn’t stay away from these kids forever. And that’s why there have been a lot of see-you-laters and no goodbyes.

I’m not really moving, and I’m not going on vacation. “Going on a journey” makes it sound like I’m from Lord of the Rings. “Starting a new chapter” seems like I’m going through a midlife crisis (I swear, I’m not). So, for now, let’s take a step back so I can talk about the “Why” before we get to the “What”. First, a few things about me: I love moving. Not just for the new place, new neighborhood part. Every part of it. Packing, organizing, purging, cleaning, unpacking, reorganizing, rearranging. I live pretty simply. I’ve never really been someone who has a lot of “stuff”, and I like it that way. Some people yell at the TV when they watch sports. I yell at the TV when I watch Hoarders. I could live anywhere. During basically any trip I’ve ever been on, there’s been at least a moment where I’ve thought to myself, “I should totally move here.” I’m an “all or nothing” person. I’ve never been good with moderation. Pretty much anyone I know can attest to that. I thrive on change. It’s easy to get into a comfortable routine. But for me, getting comfortable quickly leads to getting bored, which quickly leads to getting lazy. For about the last six months, I’ve been trying to come up with a way that I could experience a lot of change on a regular basis and temporarily stay in some of the cities I’ve considered living in. After crossing off some, um, far-fetched ideas, here’s what I decided… To quit my full-time agency job and work as a remote freelancer. To rent rooms through Airbnb in cities across the US that I’ve considered living in, for a month at a time. To pack up everything I need in my car, and road trip the whole thing. Seems pretty simple, right? Once I began telling friends about my plan, it started to seem like such a no-brainer. It was funny how many times I heard, “that’s perfect for you”, like, “duh, Scott, why wouldn’t you do that?” So, I hit the road at the beginning of October. I’ll try to post some updates here along the way. As an “all or nothing” kinda person, I’m just hoping this doesn’t turn into “nothing” too soon :)
